25. Finland Exports Lumber
In the comic “Fur Trading”, reader Mikko commented that tar, lumber and dried fish were Finland’s main exports during the Middle Ages, not furs. The commenter is correct. The book I use for my research, A History of Finland, stated that furs were an important export during Roman times, but the trade collapsed due to over hunting.
To set the record straight, today’s comic is about one of Finland’s principal exports in the Middle Ages: wood. Thursday’s comic will be about tar.
And hey look, it’s Jock Tamson, the personification of Scotland! We probably won’t see much more of the lad since it was Finland’s friend and neighbor, Norway, who had a relationship with him. This comic won’t spend a lot of time on Norway as Norwegian history has already been extensively covered in comic form by Hägar the Horrible.
