Christianity took a hold in the Baltic much later than in the rest of Europe and Finland was the last country in Europe where it was established. Christianity was introduced by the Swedish army in what is known as the Great Northern Crusades, which occurred around the time of The Crusades in the Middle East. The Northern Crusades were kind of a sideshow to the Main Event. I don’t think the Pope was even aware there was a Northern Crusade until years later.
